There’s an exciting new product hitting the shelves exclusively at Spinneys this coming weekend – the Harvest Heroes card game! Based on the classic game of Top Trumps that we all know and love, Harvest Heroes is a card collection featuring 52 fun fruit and vegetable characters, like Basheer the Blueberry and Clara the Clementine.
Created by Spinneys, and designed for children aged 7-11, Harvest Heroes aims to become a favourite game for young people in the UAE, while simultaneously teaching about healthy eating habits and basic nutrition. Each card showcases the nutrition levels of the different fruit and vegetable characters, across the categories of protein, carbohydrates, energy (kcal) and fibre.
Who has more fibre – is it Sophia the Strawberry or Antonio the Avocado? Will Chadi the Corn beat Bader the Button Mushroom with higher protein? The cards also feature a range of fun facts for each character, for example – did you know that strawberries are full of vitamin C to help us stay healthy, and they are the only fruit in the world that have the seeds on the outside?
How to play Harvest Heroes:
To play the game, the first player must choose a nutritional fact from their card and compete against other players, where the highest value wins the round and collects the cards. The player who finishes the game with all the cards is the Harvest Hero winner.
Not stopping there, Spinneys has also created ‘Harvest Superheroes’ – a mix of 5 limited edition collectible foil cards that can be found at random in 1 of every 10 packs of Harvest Heroes. Pick up a packet of Harvest Heroes and you may be lucky enough to find Superhero Barak the Basil Plant or Superheroes Delilah and Don the Dragonfruits, and more.
This game launch is the latest pillar in the Spinneys Farm to Table programme – the region’s first comprehensive healthy eating and sustainable food program for children. Launched in 2021, the Farm to Table team is on a mission to educate one million individuals about healthy sustainable diets by the end of 2023. The programme, currently operating in 68 public and private schools across the UAE, teaches how food is produced both locally and internationally, showing the food journey from the farm to the dinner table. It includes educational modules, visits to local farms, healthy cooking classes with well-known chefs, inspiring talks with local producers, and visits to Spinney’s Layan store – the retailer’s first ever sustainable supermarket.
With approximately 25% of 5–17 year-olds in the UAE currently categorized as obese, the figures are already high and future projections set this to increase 2.4% year on year unless several actions are taken. [1]
Sunil Kumar, CEO of Spinneys UAE mentions – ‘As a local retailer in the UAE, we have a responsibility to help improve the lives of citizens and residents. Spinneys Farm to Table programme has been designed to support UAE government initiatives relating to the National Wellbeing Strategy 2031 [2], and National Food Security Strategy 2051 [3], to tackle major health and lifestyle and sustainability challenges in the UAE. Harvest Heroes is a fun and exciting step forward to supporting the children and families of the UAE to create positive lifestyle changes for healthy futures.’
With the new launch of Harvest Heroes across participating schools, and available in stores from Monday 27th February in all major Spinneys stores, Farm to Table is well on its way to reaching the target of educating one million people and fulfilling the ethos of Spinneys to always inspire and encourage the UAE community to ‘Eat Well, Live Well’.
